Modernizing a family-owned pest control website with personality and charm
A refreshed, mobile-friendly website that highlights trusted local service, approachable branding, and decades of family-run experience.
Project Overview
Ask the Bug Man! is a long-running, family-owned pest control company based in Eugene, known for its personal service, strong reputation, and loyal referral-driven client base. The business is led by Dave Ottovich and his family, with a growing team of technicians serving both residential and commercial properties throughout the region.
The original website already had a recognizable style and memorable branding, so the goal of this redesign was not to reinvent the business — but to modernize and strengthen what already worked well. The updated design widened the page layouts, improved readability by breaking content into more approachable sections, and updated the site to function smoothly across mobile devices and modern screen sizes.
My Role
Website Design (contractor)
Preserving the Brand Personality
One of the most enjoyable parts of this project was leaning into the company’s existing personality and recognizable brand voice. From the playful business name and bold logo to the conversational tone of the content, the redesign keeps the site approachable while giving it a cleaner, more polished presentation.
Clearer Navigation & Stronger Readability
The refreshed design reorganized large blocks of information into easier-to-scan sections, helping visitors quickly understand services, contact options, and the company’s family-centered approach. Larger layouts and improved spacing also created a more comfortable browsing experience across desktop and mobile devices.
Longstanding Community Reputation
Ask the Bug Man! has built much of its business through referrals and repeat customers rather than heavy advertising, serving everyone from homeowners to major regional clients like the University of Oregon. The updated website helps reflect that trusted reputation while giving the business a stronger and more current online presence.
And hey — Dave also made his television debut while consulting on an episode of TLC’s series Hoarding: Buried Alive. (If you’re interested, it’s Season 3, Episode 2, titled “There are Mice Everywhere.” And apparently there were, too. Hundreds of them! Yikes!)
